Self Diagnostic · Your Current Pattern
Held-Back
A pattern in your current moment, not a fixed type. Patterns shift as you do. Take the diagnostic again whenever something feels different.
WHAT’S SHOWING UP
Strong planning, blocked by an inner voice.
The diagnostic is reading a pattern in which you've done much of the structural work — you know what you want, you've made plans before, and you've thought carefully about your direction — but something internal keeps pressing the pause button. Self-permission, a critical inner voice, or the sense that now isn't the right time often shows up in this pattern.
This is one of the most common patterns we see, and it isn't a sign of weakness. People who are doing serious planning work are often the people who feel this most sharply, because the gap between what they want and what they've allowed themselves to start is the thing most visible to them.
WHAT’S THIS MEANS IN PRACTICE
The next Step isn’t a new plan
For this pattern, more planning rarely helps. The work is in the internal dialogue — how you talk to yourself when you start something, how you respond to your own setbacks, and what permission you're waiting for that no one else can give you.
Andy writes about this directly. The Modern Golden Rule begins with the treatment-of-self chapters because how you treat yourself is the precondition for how you treat anyone else — and for whether you allow yourself to act on the plans you've already made.

Three places to start tonight.
While the course is being built, here are three pieces of Andy's work that speak directly to this pattern. Each is short enough to fit in a single sitting.
